Responsive web design: A must-have for a good Google ranking

Is your website optimised for mobile devices? If not, it can have a negative effect on your Google ranking. You can easily check whether your company website meets Google’s requirements for mobile-friendly websites.

There is a big change coming this spring in the Google search algorithm. Mobile-friendliness will now be an important ranking factor. That means responsive websites that automatically adapt to mobile devices will be ranked higher. They will appear higher up in the search results. If a website is not optimised for tablets and smartphones, it will appear lower in the search results. And visitor numbers will sink.

Is my website mobile-friendly?

Easily check whether your website meets the new ranking criteria: Google test.

My website is not optimised. What now?

Don’t panic, there’s still time to change it. Here are some points that are especially important to Google:

  • Categorise contents: The smaller the screen, the fewer the contents. Using categorisation, you define what will be included or excluded depending on the screen size.
  • Text size: Text has to be easily readable on devices, so it can’t be too large or too small. The contents also cannot extend beyond the designated area. It’s a drawback if you have to zoom in or hold the smartphone sideways to read something.
  • Optimised plug-ins: Plug-ins on the website should also be mobile-friendly. Built-in counters for visitor numbers or flash images are especially problematic.
  • Touch-friendly links: Links cannot be too close to each other so it’s easy to make a selection on a touch display.
